8 Best iPhone Apps for Songwriting & Music Recording (2026)
Published · Updated
Compare 8 iPhone apps for songwriting and recording, from free Voice Memos and GarageBand to Zoundroom and Demo: prices, free plans and iPhone setup.
The best iPhone app for songwriting depends on the job in front of you, and two of the most useful ones are already free from Apple:
- Capture an idea: Voice Memos, built into every iPhone.
- Write lyrics next to your own recordings: Zoundroom, which keeps the words and the takes of each song in one project, on iPhone, Android and the web.
- Produce a full demo: GarageBand, free, with instruments, Drummer and up to 32 tracks.
- Get chords under a lyric: Demo, which plays progressions and suggests chords for a melody you sing.
- Check rhymes and syllables: Lyric Notepad.
- Write notation or guitar tab: Fender Notion.
- Make beats from your own sounds: Koala Sampler.
- Record with bandmates on Android or a computer: BandLab.
If you install nothing else, Voice Memos and GarageBand already let you capture and arrange a song for free. A dedicated app earns its place when one step keeps failing: the lyric lives in Notes while the melody sits in a file called “New Recording 14”, or the chords never arrive.
Every price, free plan and platform below comes from each app’s App Store listing, official site or Apple’s documentation, checked on September 26, 2026; prices are from the US App Store and vary by country. The criteria: what each app does best, what the free version keeps, what you pay, offline use and where else your songs open.

1. Zoundroom: best for writing lyrics next to your own takes
Choose it if: your lyric is in Notes, the melody is in Voice Memos and the latest version is somewhere in a chat.
Zoundroom keeps each song in one project with its takes, lyric, notes and chord sheets, so the words and the melody stay on the same page. On iPhone, the «Record» button on the home screen starts a take, and «Select project» drops it into the right song. Inside a note, tap the microphone and the take is inserted where your cursor is, right under the line you just sang; press play and the note’s takes play in order while you change a word. A voice memo saved to Files, or a GarageBand export, is imported into the project and then inserted into the note. The same account opens the song on Android and in the browser, and you can invite a co-writer to the project, as the songwriting app for iPhone page shows.
Here is where it fits: you sang a chorus into Voice Memos on the way home and you know its first two lines. That evening, create a Zoundroom project with the working title, import the memo, open a note, type the lines and record a second melody right under them. When you reopen the song, on your iPhone or at a computer, the current lyric and the takes that explain it are on one page instead of in three apps. Start tonight with one unfinished chorus: the words and one sung take in the same note.
When a line stalls, Auralis, the assistant inside the note, reads your lyric and answers in text: «Get unstuck» offers two or three ways out of the line, and «Chord Progression» writes two progressions with chord symbols. To hear a harmony over a take, the multitrack editor («Edit audio») records up to 8 tracks, the original included, inside the same project.
Free plan and Pro: Free lets you try the method with one song: 2 projects, 5 items and notes of up to 1,000 characters. Pro is for writing every week: notes of up to 10,000 characters, enough for a full lyric with chords and margin notes, up to 1,000 projects and 10,000 items, PDF chord sheets, custom tags and comments at the exact second of a take. It costs $7.99 a month or $49.99 a year on the US App Store (zoundroom.com lists €7.99 a month or €59.99 a year), and it is 7 days free on iPhone and on the web if you have never tried it. On iPhone, the button at the end of this article opens the App Store.
Limit: to produce the song with drums, bass and keys, take it to GarageBand, below.
2. Voice Memos: the free way to capture ideas
Choose it if: you need to catch a melody within five seconds of hearing it in your head.
Voice Memos sits in the Utilities folder of every iPhone. Its App Store listing names the tools a songwriter uses: uncompressed audio, trim and replace, Save As to keep the original, Enhance Recording to reduce background noise and room reverberation, folders and favorites. On the recent models Apple lists, starting with iPhone 16 Pro, you can record a vocal layer over an instrumental take without headphones, then mix or separate the two layers.
Limit: a list of recordings is not a song. There is no place for the lyric next to the take, and transcripts are built for speech, not sung lyrics. Once you keep more than a dozen ideas, move each keeper into one project per song or follow a voice memo system for songwriters.
Free plan: free and preinstalled. With Voice Memos turned on in iCloud, recordings appear on your iPad and Mac too.
3. GarageBand: free production that is often enough
Choose it if: the song is written and you want to hear it with drums, bass and keys.
GarageBand is free from Apple on iPhone and iPad, with a separate free version for Mac. Its App Store listing names Touch Instruments, Smart Instruments with Chord Strips, a virtual Drummer, the Beat Sequencer, Live Loops, the Audio Recorder with amps and effects, Multi-Take Recording, 24-bit audio and up to 32 tracks. A Note Pad in the song settings holds lyric ideas, one set of notes per song. To import a voice memo, first set the song section length to Automatic; otherwise only the part that fits the current section comes in.
Limit: the current version needs iOS 26 or later and 1.9 GB of space, and recording several inputs at once requires an audio interface. A GarageBand song keeps the arrangement, not the history of the lyric: which verse changed and which take you preferred. It is Apple-only, so a bandmate on Android cannot open the project.
Free plan: everything is free, including extra instruments and loops from the Sound Library.
4. Demo: chords under your lyric
Choose it if: you have words or a melody but no chords, or you do not play well enough to accompany yourself.
Demo generates playable chords: build a progression or tap a preset, pick a rhythm and loop it while you write with its rhyme tool. Its Suggest feature listens to a melody you sing and proposes matching chords; the release notes say it works offline, on the device. A multitrack recorder captures your vocal, a Calibrate option aligns takes recorded with Bluetooth headphones, and you can export a mix, stems, MIDI or a chord sheet. CoWrite shares a song with collaborators.
Limit: Demo is Apple-only (iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Vision Pro) and in English. The listing says Demo+ unlocks more than 100 features without saying which stay free.
Free plan: free download. Demo+ costs $5.99 a month or $39.99 a year in the US; the yearly plan starts with a 3-day trial.
5. Lyric Notepad: rhymes, syllables and flow
Choose it if: the problem is inside the lines, such as a verse that rushes or bars that must land on the beat.
Lyric Notepad colors matching rhymes, shows the syllable count of each line and has a Measure Mode that splits lyrics into quarter measures, with a metronome at your tempo. Word Lookup finds rhymes, near rhymes and synonyms, and the built-in recorder saves a performance into the matching section.
Limit: it contains ads, the interface is in English, and an automatic count cannot hear how you sing a word, so check the stresses by singing. For a quick count without installing anything, the free lyric syllable counter runs in the browser.
Free plan: free with ads. The US App Store lists in-app purchases from $0.99 to $49.99 without naming each plan.
6. Fender Notion: notation and guitar tab
Choose it if: you write parts for other musicians, teach, or think in standard notation or tab.
Notion, now called Fender Notion, writes scores and guitar tab with an on-screen piano, fretboard or drum pad and plays them back with sampled instruments. The free version includes unlimited staves, all editing features, core sounds and export to MusicXML, MIDI, PDF, WAV and MP3. Its listing says it works without a constant internet connection.
Limit: a full score is cramped on a phone screen, so an iPad helps. For most pop songs, a lyric with chords above it is enough: the free chord sheet maker transposes one and prints it.
Free plan: yes. Free registration adds another sound set and up to four voices per staff. The Feature Bundle, a $14.99 in-app purchase, adds handwriting recognition, layout controls and expansion sounds.
7. Koala Sampler: beats from your own sounds
Choose it if: your songs start from a groove, a loop or a found sound.
Koala records up to 64 samples with the iPhone microphone, or loads your own sounds and 250 built-in ones, then sequences them into beats with 16 effects. It exports loops or whole tracks as WAV files, runs as an AUv3 plugin inside GarageBand and can split a sample into drums, bass, vocals and other parts.
Limit: it is a beat machine, not a place for lyrics or arrangements, and there is no free version. Before paying, try GarageBand’s Beat Sequencer and Drummer.
Free plan: none. It costs $4.99 on the US App Store and on Google Play, with Samurai Edition ($3.99) and Mixer ($4.99) as in-app purchases on iPhone.
8. BandLab: a free studio for bands on different devices
Choose it if: your bandmates use Android phones or computers and you want to record parts in the same project.
BandLab is a free studio on iPhone, iPad, Android and the web. Its App Store listing names unlimited multitrack projects, free cloud storage, cross-device syncing, a drum machine, sampler and looper, SongStarter for AI song ideas, and AutoPitch. If you want AI that goes further and generates a full sung track, this guide to AI song apps compares Suno, Udio and others that run on iPhone, with prices and rights.
Limit: it is built for production and sharing, with no rhyme or syllable tools, and both store listings say it contains ads.
Free plan: yes. Membership costs $14.99 a month on the US App Store.
Set up your iPhone for songwriting
Ten minutes of settings save many lost takes:
- Record Voice Memos in lossless quality. Go to Settings > Apps > Voice Memos. Under Audio Quality, choose Lossless: larger files, no compression. In Recording Mode, choose Stereo, or Spatial Audio on models that offer it. Then move the app from the Utilities folder to your Home Screen.
- Turn on the count-in in GarageBand. Tap the Settings button in the control bar, then Metronome and Count-in, and turn on Count In. Set the Tempo in the same menu, and under Advanced turn on 24-bit Audio Resolution.
- Use wired headphones when you sing over a track. Bluetooth adds delay. With a headset or an interface connected, the Monitor button in GarageBand’s Audio Recorder becomes active. The Voice Memos vocal layer is the exception: on supported models it records over an instrumental without headphones.
- Silence the phone. Open Control Center, tap Focus, then Do Not Disturb. In Settings > Focus you can also schedule a Focus that turns on when you open a specific app, such as GarageBand.
- Keep one project per song. Give it the working title and keep the lyric, the takes and the chord sheet together. Name each take for what to listen for, such as “Chorus — higher ending”.
For the takes, hold the phone about a hand span (15–20 cm, 6–8 in) from your mouth in the quietest soft-furnished room you have. The guide to recording a demo with your phone covers placement, levels and common mistakes.
Which iPhone app should you choose?
- You write the lyric and the melody together: Zoundroom, with each take recorded inside the lyric’s note and the same song on Android and the web.
- Solo, Apple only, free: Voice Memos to capture and GarageBand to arrange. Add Zoundroom when lyrics and takes need to stay together.
- A band with Android phones: Zoundroom for the song project, with the same account on Android and the web, and BandLab to record parts together.
- Lyrics first, no instrument: Demo for chords, or loop Am–F–C–G in the free chord progression player while you sing.
- Rap and beats: Koala Sampler for the beat and Lyric Notepad for bars and rhymes.
- Notation or teaching: Fender Notion.
- iPad: GarageBand, Demo, Notion, Koala and BandLab run on iPad; Zoundroom opens in the browser.
Try two apps with one song in 15 minutes
Use the same chorus in the two apps that match your problem.
| Minutes | Do this | Look for |
|---|---|---|
| 1–3 | Record the chorus melody twice | How many taps before it records? |
| 4–7 | Type the four lines beside the take | Can you read the words while it plays? |
| 8–12 | Use the feature you came for: chords, rhymes, a beat or a second track | Does it fix the step where your songs stall? |
| 13–15 | Close the app, reopen the song and send it to a co-writer | Can you find the current lyric and the right take at once? |
Keep the app that made the next step obvious. When a few songs are ready for rehearsal, the free setlist maker orders them with key, tempo and length. For lyric-focused apps beyond the iPhone, compare the best songwriting apps for lyrics.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best iPhone app for writing lyrics and melody together?
Zoundroom: record inside the lyric’s note and the take stays under the line you sang, with the whole song in one project on iPhone, Android and the web. Pro gives each note room for up to 10,000 characters and is 7 days free on iPhone and on the web. If you need chords to sing over first, Demo plays them for you.
What is the best free songwriting app for iPhone?
Voice Memos and GarageBand cost nothing and cover capture and production. To keep lyrics next to your recordings, Zoundroom’s free plan holds two song projects, enough to try it with a real song. BandLab is free for multitrack work across iPhone, Android and the web.
Can I record a whole song on my iPhone?
Yes. GarageBand records vocals, instruments and virtual players on up to 32 tracks. With the built-in microphone you record one part at a time; recording several inputs at once needs an audio interface.
Is GarageBand enough for songwriting?
For turning a song into a demo, often yes. It is weaker at the writing stage: one Note Pad per song and no link between a lyric version and the take that goes with it. Many songwriters capture and write in Voice Memos or Zoundroom and open GarageBand when the song is ready for instruments.
What is the best iPad app for songwriting?
GarageBand for arranging, Demo for chords and Notion for notation all run on iPad. Zoundroom’s App Store app is for iPhone, so on an iPad you write lyrics with audio in your browser with the same account. On Android, the options change: see the Android songwriting apps guide.
