Online voice recorder

Record a melody, a riff or a lyric idea in your browser, with a count-in and a click if you want them. Name each take and download it as WAV: the audio never leaves your device.

A recorder made for song ideas

Most voice recorders are made for meetings and lectures. This one is made for the moment a melody or a line shows up: press the space bar and sing, come in after a count-in at the song’s tempo, keep several takes and download the one that works. It runs in the browser on your phone or laptop, with no account and no upload.

Record a song idea

Your recordings stay on your device: nothing is uploaded and you need no account. Takes live only in this tab, so download the ones you want to keep before you close it.

In Zoundroom, every idea goes into its song’s project: record the next take right inside the lyric’s note, on iPhone, Android or in the browser.

How to record a song idea well on your phone or laptop

  1. 1Find a quiet room with soft things around you (a bedroom sounds better than a bathroom) and switch off fans and notifications.
  2. 2Hold the phone 20–30 cm (8–12 in) from your mouth or the instrument, with the microphone towards the sound. On a laptop, sit in front of it and do not type while you record.
  3. 3Sing or play the loudest part first and watch the meter: it should move well without sticking to the top. If it sticks, move back a little.
  4. 4If the idea has a groove, set its tempo and a one-bar count-in, and wear headphones so the click stays out of the take.
  5. 5Record two or three takes, name the best one with the working title and the section (“Chorus, 92 BPM”) and download it.

Embed it on your site

Paste this code into your website, your school’s page or a lesson: the tool works inside the page, free, and links back to Zoundroom.

Frequently asked questions

Is this online voice recorder free?

Yes. It works in your browser with no account, no sign-up and no watermark. You only need a microphone and to let the browser use it.

Are my recordings uploaded anywhere?

No. The audio is recorded and kept inside this browser tab; nothing is sent to Zoundroom or anyone else. Takes disappear when you close or reload the tab, so download the ones you want to keep.

What format do the takes download in?

In two: the format your browser records (WebM with Opus in Chrome, Edge and Firefox; M4A in Safari and on iPhone) and WAV, which any audio editor or DAW opens. WAV files are bigger, but they play everywhere.

Can I record with a metronome or a count-in?

Yes. Choose the tempo, 4/4 or 3/4, and a count-in of one or two bars: recording starts when the count-in ends. Turn on the click to hear it while you record, and wear headphones so it does not end up in the take.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes: in Safari on iPhone, in Chrome on Android and in any current desktop browser. Allow the microphone when the browser asks, and keep the screen on and the tab open while you record.

The microphone does not work. What can I do?

Check that the site may use the microphone (the icon next to the address), close other apps that are using it and reload the page. If the recorder is embedded in another website, open it on zoundroom.com.
