How to tune your guitar

  1. 1Choose the instrument and the tuning (standard is E A D G B E, from the thickest string to the thinnest).
  2. 2Press Start and allow the microphone. Put the phone or laptop close to the instrument in a quiet room.
  3. 3Pluck one string and let it ring. The tuner picks the nearest string on its own, or tap a string to lock it.
  4. 4If the needle is on the left the string is flat: tighten it. On the right it is sharp: loosen it. Stop when it turns green.
  5. 5Tune every string, then check them all again: the neck settles as the tension changes.

Frequently asked questions

How do I tune a guitar with an online tuner?

Press Start, allow the microphone and pluck one string at a time. Tighten the string while the needle is on the left (flat) and loosen it while it is on the right (sharp), until it turns green. Then check all six strings again.

What are the notes of standard guitar tuning?

From the thickest (6th) string to the thinnest (1st): E A D G B E. A common way to remember it is Eddie Ate Dynamite, Good Bye Eddie.

Can I tune a bass, a ukulele or Drop D?

Yes. Choose bass (E A D G, or Drop D), ukulele (G C E A) or one of the guitar tunings: Drop D, half step down, DADGAD, open G and open D.

Why does the tuner jump around or not detect the note?

Play one string at a time, let it ring, mute the others and keep background noise low. Phone microphones hear low strings better a little closer to the soundhole or the amp.

Does it record or send my audio?

No. The sound is analysed in your browser while the tuner is on; nothing is recorded, saved or sent. Press Stop to release the microphone.

What is the A4 = 440 Hz setting?

It is the pitch reference: the A above middle C at 440 Hz, the usual standard. Some bands tune to 442 Hz or 432 Hz; change it only if you play with an instrument that uses another reference.
