Tap tempo and metronome

Tap the beat of a song to find its BPM, then practise or record your idea against a steady click at the same tempo.

Know the tempo before you record

Writing the BPM down with the idea saves you from guessing later, and a click keeps a demo steady enough to add parts over it. Tap along with a recording, a hum or a loop.

Find and play the tempo

How to use it

  1. 1Tap the button (or press T) on every beat of the song, at least four times.
  2. 2Check the BPM, and halve or double it if the song feels twice as slow or fast.
  3. 3Pick the meter and press Play to hear the click; the first beat of each bar is higher.
  4. 4Write the tempo next to the song, or open the chord player at the same BPM.

Embed it on your site

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the BPM of a song?

Play the song and tap along with the kick or the pulse you would clap to. After four to eight taps the average is usually within one BPM; halve or double it if it feels like you are tapping twice per beat.

What BPM is a ballad, pop or hip-hop song?

As a rough guide: ballads 60–80 BPM, pop 95–130, hip-hop 80–100 (or 140–170 counted in half time for trap), house around 120–128 and drum and bass around 170. Genres overlap, so trust the feel.

Why can’t I hear it on my iPhone?

The click plays as regular audio, so it works with the silent switch on. Turn the volume up and check that no other app is playing sound.

Does it record or store anything?

No. It runs in your browser and does not use the microphone.
