Change the speed without changing the pitch

Slow down a solo to learn it, rehearse the song at another tempo or try the chorus a half step higher.

  • Speed from 50% to 150% with the slider while the pitch stays put. Set the BPM to go from 0.5× to 2×.
  • Pitch from −12 to +12 semitones without touching the speed.
  • Varispeed moves speed and pitch together, like a turntable.
  • Trim the start and the end, set the gain and loop the part you are working on.

Change the key in one tap

When you open an audio, Zoundroom detects its BPM and key. It is an estimate: correct it with tap tempo and the key picker.

  • Pick the target key (D to E, say) and the editor transposes by the shortest way.
  • Handy to move a demo into your range, or into the range of whoever will sing it.
  • Speech or a free tempo may leave the BPM undetected: tap it in yourself.

Record over the song

Hit record and sing or play while what you already have plays back. Each take becomes a new track.

  • Metronome and a count-in of 0, 1 or 2 bars so you come in on time.
  • Latency calibration: the editor measures your device’s delay with a few clicks through the speaker, so takes land where they should.
  • Record with wired headphones: Bluetooth delay cannot be measured, so takes would not stay in time.

Multitrack: up to 8 tracks per song

The original recording and up to 7 takes, stacked one under the other (8 tracks in all), on audio up to 30 minutes long.

  • Volume, mute (M) and solo (S) on every track, plus a fine sync adjustment.
  • If a take comes out quiet, the editor turns it up for you. If you don’t like it, delete it.
  • Reopen the audio later and every take is back as its own track, ready to keep mixing.

Effects for a more finished sound

Just enough to make a demo sound better, without wrestling with parameters.

  • 3-band EQ (low, mid, high): drag the curve with your finger or the mouse.
  • One-knob compressor.
  • Tempo-synced delay (1/4, 1/8, dotted 1/8 or 1/16) or set in milliseconds.
  • A bypass switch to hear the take with and without effects.

Edit on your computer, carry on from your phone

At app.zoundroom.com you get the same editor with a desktop view: every track on the left, the whole song in the middle, and Adjust and Effects on the right. Start on one device and finish on the other, because it is the same project.

  • Keyboard shortcuts: Space to play, R to record and ⌘Z to undo.
  • Undo and redo, timeline zoom and “Reset all”.
  • Automatic drafts: close halfway and you are offered your changes back when you return.

How it works

Audio is processed on your device in real time. When you save, the result is uploaded to your project as a normal audio file that plays in every version of the app.

  1. Open the audio

In any project, tap ⋮ on the audio and choose Edit audio. On iPhone, Android or app.zoundroom.com.

  2. Adjust and record

Change speed, pitch and effects, and record your takes over it. Editing is non-destructive.

  3. Save

Replace the audio in the project, with the same name and position, or save it as a new version: “Name (v2)”.

  4. Export when you need to

Share the mix as an M4A file (AAC 256 kbps).

In shared and band projects

  • It works in personal, shared and band projects. In a band, every member can record their take over the song and save their own version.
  • If you did not create the audio, you always save a version under your name: a bandmate’s original is never overwritten.
  • If the audio has comments or sits in a note, the editor asks before saving.

What the editor does not do

It is an editor for working on your ideas, not a production studio. Keep using your DAW for these:

  • It does not separate stems or remove vocals or instruments from a song.
  • No fades, normalization, reverb or panning.
  • It cannot cut pieces out of the middle or split tracks: trimming is only at the start and the end.
  • It does not export WAV or MP3, or tracks as separate files.
  • It does not record a new take on each loop pass.
  • No MIDI or virtual instruments, no mastering and no pitch correction.

Questions about the editor

How do I change the speed of a song without changing the pitch?

Open the audio in the editor (⋮ → Edit audio), go to Adjust and move Speed between 50% and 150%: the pitch stays the same. Set the BPM to go from half to double tempo. With varispeed on, speed and pitch change together.

Can I change the key of a song?

Yes. Raise or lower it by up to 12 semitones without changing the speed, or pick the target key and the editor transposes by the shortest way. The key it detects when you open the audio is an estimate you can correct.

How do I record over a song?

Open the audio in the editor, hit record and sing or play while it plays back. Each take is a new track: the original plus up to 7 takes, 8 tracks in all. Use wired headphones and calibrate the latency so takes stay in time.

Can I record with Bluetooth headphones?

We don’t recommend it: Bluetooth delay cannot be measured, so takes would not stay in time. Use wired headphones to record over a song.

Will it ruin my original recording?

No. Editing is non-destructive: the original is untouched until you save, and then you choose to replace it or save a new version. If you close the app halfway, you are offered your changes back when you return.

Can I edit on my computer?

Yes. The editor is also at app.zoundroom.com, with a desktop view and keyboard shortcuts. It is the same project: what you start on your phone you can finish on your computer.

What happens if I edit a bandmate’s audio?

It is saved as a version under your name and your bandmate’s original stays as it was. In band projects, every member can record their take over the song and save their own version.

Is the editor free?

The Free plan includes 5 editing sessions. Opening the editor and leaving without saving does not use one; a session is used when you save or export. Pro and Band have no limit.

What format does it export?

Export shares the mix as M4A (AAC 256 kbps). The editor does not export WAV, MP3 or separate tracks.

Does it replace my DAW?

No. The editor is for adjusting an idea, giving it a more finished sound and recording over it. For production, mastering, MIDI or stem separation, keep using your DAW.
