Vocal range test

Sing from your lowest to your highest comfortable note. The test shows your range, the voice types it is closest to and a direct link to the keys that fit your voice.

Your range, measured on held notes

The test only counts notes you hold for a moment, so a crack or a slide does not move your range. Sing comfortable notes, not the most extreme ones you can reach: a song needs notes you can sing again and again.

In Zoundroom, write your range in the song’s note and record the melody in the key you chose, so you never have to work it out again.

How to test your vocal range

  1. 1Warm up for a couple of minutes with easy humming and slides.
  2. 2Press Start and allow the microphone. Sing a comfortable low note and hold it for a second.
  3. 3Go down step by step until the notes turn breathy or unstable; stop at the last clear one.
  4. 4Then go up step by step to your highest comfortable note, in the voice you would use in a song.
  5. 5Read your range and voice type, and open the key finder with your range already filled in.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my vocal range?

Sing your lowest comfortable note, then climb step by step to your highest comfortable note, holding each one for a second. The lowest and highest notes you hold clearly are your working range.

What voice type am I?

The test compares your range with typical ranges for bass, baritone, tenor, alto, mezzo-soprano and soprano. It is a starting point, not a classification: where your voice sounds best matters more than the edges, and ranges grow with practice.

What is a good vocal range?

There is no score to hit. Most pop songs use about an octave to an octave and a half, so what matters is choosing a key that places the melody inside the part of your range that sounds best.

Should I count falsetto?

Sing the voice you would use in the song. If you use falsetto in songs, include it; otherwise stop at the top of your chest or mixed voice.

Does it record my voice?

No. The sound is analysed in your browser while the test is on; nothing is recorded, saved or sent. Press Stop to release the microphone.
