Vocal warm-up

Pick your voice type and press play: a piano leads six short exercises, one half step higher each time and back down, so you warm up before writing or recording without guessing the notes.

Five minutes before the take

A voice sings better after a few minutes of gentle work: humming and lip trills first, then scales and arpeggios. The piano gives you each starting note and stays inside the comfortable middle of the voice type you choose, so nothing pushes you to the edges of your range.

Warm up your voice

In Zoundroom, record the first take inside the song’s project right after warming up, and note in the song’s note which key felt best.

How to warm up

  1. 1Choose your voice type, or come from the vocal range test and your range is used.
  2. 2Play the full routine, or one exercise at a time. Each one starts with the chord, then the notes to sing.
  3. 3Sing softly and follow the piano up and down; skip any step that feels tight.
  4. 4Finish with a phrase of your own song and record it.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a vocal warm-up be?

Five to ten minutes is enough before most sessions. The full routine here lasts about five minutes at the default tempo; before a long recording day, run it twice or add your own song at the end.

Which voice type should I choose?

The one closest to your comfortable range: bass, baritone or tenor for most men, alto, mezzo-soprano or soprano for most women. If you do not know, take the vocal range test first; it links back here with your range.

Can I warm up quietly at home?

Yes. Humming, lip trills and straw exercises work at low volume and are the core of the routine. Keep everything soft; volume is not the goal of a warm-up.

What if a note hurts or feels tight?

Stop that exercise and go back to humming. A warm-up should never hurt. If hoarseness or pain lasts, see a voice professional.
