On the guitar neck
Every note up to the 15th fret; the root (E) is coloured. It sits on fret 12 of the low E string and fret 7 of the A string, the two usual starting points.
E blues adds B♭, the blue note, to E minor pentatonic, giving E, G, A, B♭, B and D. All six open strings belong to it and box 1 starts in open position, which makes E one of the most common blues keys on guitar. The usual chords are E7, A7 and B7.
The E blues scale has six notes: E – G – A – B♭ – B – D. It is the E minor pentatonic plus one note, B♭: the blue note, between A and B, which gives it the blues sound.
Tip: Play a shuffle on the open low E and A strings and drop in the B♭ at the 1st fret of the A string as a passing note.
