Pentatonic and blues scales

G sharp blues scale

G♯ blues has G♯, B, C♯, D, D♯ and F♯, and its blue note is D natural. The open D string plays that blue note, the open B string fits too, and box 1 starts at the 4th fret. It sounds identical to A♭ blues, so a chart in either spelling uses the same frets.

The G sharp blues scale has six notes: G♯ – B – C♯ – D – D♯ – F♯. It is the G sharp minor pentatonic plus one note, D: the blue note, between C♯ and D♯, which gives it the blues sound.

Tip: Pull off from the D♯ at the 1st fret of the D string to the open D for an easy blue-note slur.

On the guitar neck

Every note up to the 15th fret; the root (G♯) is coloured. It sits on fret 4 of the low E string and fret 11 of the A string, the two usual starting points.
