Every note up to the 15th fret; the root (D) is coloured. It sits on fret 10 of the low E string and fret 5 of the A string, the two usual starting points.
D blues contains D, F, G, A♭, A and C, with A♭ as its blue note. The open D, G and A strings all fit, so you can mix fretted licks with open notes in the low positions. It works over a blues with D7, G7 and A7, and box 1 starts at the 10th fret.
The D blues scale has six notes: D – F – G – A♭ – A – C. It is the D minor pentatonic plus one note, A♭: the blue note, between G and A, which gives it the blues sound.
Tip: Over an open D drone, walk up the G string from open G to A♭ at the 1st fret and A at the 2nd.
