Pentatonic and blues scales

C minor pentatonic scale

C, E♭, F, G and B♭ make up C minor pentatonic, and they are also the five notes of E♭ major pentatonic. Box 1 starts at the 8th fret of the low E string, and the open G string is the only open string in the scale. To play it lower on the neck, start from the C at the 3rd fret of the A string.

The C minor pentatonic scale has five notes: C – E♭ – F – G – B♭. They are the notes of C minor without D and A♭, the two that form semitones, which is why it rarely clashes with the chords of the key.

Tip: Loop Cm7 and Fm7 and land your phrases on E♭, the minor third, so the minor sound comes through.

On the guitar neck

Every note up to the 15th fret; the root (C) is coloured. It sits on fret 8 of the low E string and fret 3 of the A string, the two usual starting points.

Which chords it works over

It sounds right over Cm and the other chords of C minor, and over a blues in C. The same notes make the E♭ major pentatonic.
