Every note up to the 15th fret; the root (C) is coloured. It sits on fret 8 of the low E string and fret 3 of the A string, the two usual starting points.
C blues has six notes: C, E♭, F, G♭, G and B♭. The blue note is G♭, a half step below G, and no open string fits except G itself. Box 1 starts at the 8th fret of the low E string, a good spot for a twelve-bar blues with C7, F7 and G7.
The C blues scale has six notes: C – E♭ – F – G♭ – G – B♭. It is the C minor pentatonic plus one note, G♭: the blue note, between F and G, which gives it the blues sound.
Tip: Slide from the G♭ at the 4th fret of the D string to the G at the 5th to hear the blue note resolve.
