Zoundroom vs Voice Memos and Notes for Songwriters
Published
Voice Memos and Notes are free and instant on iPhone. Zoundroom keeps each song's lyric, chords and takes together on iPhone, Android and the web.
Stick with Voice Memos and Notes if you only use an iPhone, write alone and want to catch an idea in one tap at no cost; pick Zoundroom if you write your own songs and want the lyric, the chords and every take of a song in one project, on iPhone, Android and the web, shared with your band. Many songwriters use both: Voice Memos to catch the hook, Zoundroom once that hook is becoming a song.
Apple’s two apps are the default way many people keep ideas, and for good reason: they come with the phone, open instantly and cost nothing. The question is what happens after the first take, when the memo is in one app, the lyric in another and the chords nowhere.

Where Apple wins: Voice Memos is already on your iPhone, works without an account of its own, and the Action button can be set to record a voice memo (Apple’s own guide suggests it for “musical ideas”). Since iOS 18, Notes can also record audio inside a note and transcribe what you say.
When Voice Memos and Notes are the better choice
- You write alone and only on Apple devices. iCloud keeps memos and notes in sync across iPhone, iPad and Mac, with nothing to set up.
- You want zero cost and zero sign-up. Both apps are complete, with no plan to choose and no trial to remember.
- You hum dozens of fragments a week and sort later. Voice Memos’ folders, favorites and search by title or transcript handle a big pile of loose ideas.
- You want to layer a harmony quickly on a recent iPhone. On supported models, a second layer records over the first, and the two layers open as separate tracks in Logic Pro for iPad.
- Your band all have iPhones and only need to read lyrics. A shared note in iCloud is enough for a setlist or a lyric sheet.
When Zoundroom is the better choice
Zoundroom helps when a fragment turns into a song and you are tired of matching “New Recording 47” to the right verse. Each song gets its own project: you write the lyric in a note, tap the microphone inside that note and the take lands right under the line it belongs to. Rhymes for the line that still needs a pair come up as you write, and you can put each chord above its syllable, on your phone or in the browser.
- You or your band use Android, or a computer that isn’t a Mac. The same project opens on iPhone, Android and at app.zoundroom.com.
- You want the band to comment on the take itself. Invite people to one song from Share Project; with Pro or Band, their comment sits at the exact second of the demo.
- You want to catch ideas as fast as Voice Memos. On iPhone (iOS 18 or later) you can record from a widget, Control Center, the Lock Screen or the Action button; on Android, from a widget or a Quick Settings tile. Each idea goes to an “Ideas” project, and you move it to its song later.
- You want to try a harmony over the demo. The multitrack editor records up to 8 tracks over a song, changes key and speed, and saves a new version next to the original.
Its limit: the Free plan holds 2 song projects and 5 files, so a big archive of old memos needs Pro.
Using both together
You don’t have to move everything. A workflow that keeps the speed of Voice Memos and the order of a song project:
- Capture in whatever is closest. Voice Memos from the Action button, or the Zoundroom widget. Don’t name anything yet.
- Once a week, pick the memos that belong to a song. The voice memo cleanup checklist helps you decide what stays.
- Send the keepers to the song. From Voice Memos, Share → Zoundroom, then move them to their project; inside a project, Import takes several audio files at once.
- Write the lyric next to the take, add the chords and record the next attempt inside the same note.
- Invite the band to that song only when it is ready for opinions.

On Android: what replaces Voice Memos and Notes
Apple doesn’t make Voice Memos or Notes for Android, so Android songwriters use what their phone brings:
- Recorder (Google): on Pixel 3 and later and Pixel Tablet; with backup on, your recordings appear at recorder.google.com, where you can play them and search within them.
- Voice Recorder (Samsung): on Galaxy phones and tablets, with categories for each recording; Galaxy AI transcripts on select models with One UI 6.1 or later.
- Google Keep: free on Android, iPhone and the web; on Android a note can hold a voice recording, and collaborators can edit its text and recordings.
None of them puts chords over the lyric or groups takes by song, which is the gap Zoundroom fills on Android too.

Frequently asked questions
Is Zoundroom free?
Yes, there is a Free plan with no time limit: 2 song projects and 5 files, rhymes and chords included, and each project shared with up to 2 people. Pro costs €7.99 a month or €59.99 a year, and you can try it free for 7 days on iPhone and the web if you never have. Band costs €19.99 a month or €149.99 a year for up to 7 people under one subscription. See plans and pricing.
Does Zoundroom work on Android?
Yes. Zoundroom has an Android app and a web app, with the same account and the same projects as on iPhone, so a band with mixed phones works on the same songs.
Is there Voice Memos for Android?
No. Apple’s Voice Memos and Notes are for iPhone, iPad and Mac. On Android, use the recorder your phone brings (Recorder on Pixel, Voice Recorder on Galaxy) or Google Keep, or an app that runs on both, like Zoundroom.
Can Apple Notes record audio inside a note?
Yes, since iOS 18: in a note, tap the attachment button, then Record Audio. On supported iPhones it also transcribes what you say. It keeps one recording next to the text, without chords above the syllables or rhymes.
Can I move my old voice memos into Zoundroom?
Yes. On iPhone, share a memo from Voice Memos to Zoundroom, or use Import inside a project to bring several audio files at once (up to 50 per batch). On the Free plan, each one counts as a file.
Do I need to stop using Voice Memos?
No. Many songwriters keep Voice Memos for the first take and move the memos that turn into songs to Zoundroom, where the lyric, chords and band feedback live with them.
