On the guitar neck
Every note up to the 15th fret; the root (B) is coloured. It sits on fret 7 of the low E string and fret 2 of the A string, the two usual starting points.
B blues has the notes B, D, E, F, F♯ and A, with F natural as the blue note. Box 1 starts at the 7th fret, and the open low E, A, D, B and high E strings all belong to the scale. The usual twelve-bar chords are B7, E7 and F♯7, and B7 has a well-known open-position shape.
The B blues scale has six notes: B – D – E – F – F♯ – A. It is the B minor pentatonic plus one note, F: the blue note, between E and F♯, which gives it the blues sound.
Tip: Over B7, E7 and F♯7, hammer on from the E at the 2nd fret of the D string to the F at the 3rd for a quick blue-note grace.
