A blues is A, C, D, E♭, E and G, with E♭ between the fourth and the fifth as the blue note. In box 1 at the 5th fret, you find that E♭ at the 6th fret of the A string and the 8th fret of the G string. A and E are the two most common blues keys on guitar, and in A only the open B string falls outside the scale.
The A blues scale has six notes: A – C – D – E♭ – E – G. It is the A minor pentatonic plus one note, E♭: the blue note, between D and E, which gives it the blues sound.
Tip: Over A7, D7 and E7, walk down the A string from the E at the 7th fret through E♭ at the 6th to D at the 5th.
